Laurence Louis Sloss (1913-1996) Papers 1932-1996

The Laurence L. Sloss papers cover correspondence, publications, fieldwork, research and teaching of a well-known stratigraphic and petroleum geologist. Most of Sloss's professional career took place at Northwestern University, where he taught from 1947 until his retirement in 1981. His research focused mainly on stratigraphy and tectonics and the geological evolution of cratons across North America. The collection contains correspondence, field notes and maps, data sets, manuscripts, reprints, articles, reviews, teaching materials and photographs (see also photograph files).

Laurence Louis Sloss was born in August 26, 1913 in Mountain View, California, the son of Joseph and Edith (Esberg) Sloss. In 1930 he entered Stanford University and received his Bachelor of Science, major subject geology in 1934. In fall 1934 Sloss enrolled for graduate school at the University of Chicago and received his Ph.D. in geology in 1937.
